A Typical Session

What to expect when you come along to a Jitsu session.

To give you an idea of what to expect, here's a rough outline of a ‘typical’ training session:

  • warm-up: to help prevent injuries (this is the most tiring part of the evening!!).
  • line-up: an easy way to say “hello”.
  • rolling and break falling: you need to be able to fall without
  • being hurt before you can practise some of the techniques!
  • grabs: how to escape if someone grabs you.
  • blocks and throws: learning how to defend against punches as well
  • as weapons and end in an advantageous position.
  • cool-down: the session ends with a recap of the techniques learnt
  • and sometimes a silly game to cool down!

Of course, this format isn't set but at least you'll have some idea of what to anticipate! I've added some photos to give you an idea.

The other thing that might seem odd is the etiquette involved in Jiu Jitsu. Many of these customs are important for safety reasons.
